13. Domestic Airlines
1. Agni air
Agni air is the fresh airlines that has been added in the
aviation sector and started it’s operation from 16th March 2006.
At present it has a Dornier and a Twin otter. Its scheduled
flights operate to Lukla, Phaplu, Rumjatar, Tumlingtar, Dhangadi,
Jumla and chartered flights are operated to the destinations
like Simikot, Dolpo, Bajura, Bajhang, Taplejung and Manang
2. Buddha Air
Buddha air started it’s operations with Beech 1900D aircraft in
October 1997.At present it is operating with 4 Beech 1900Ds.
Buddha air is rated amongst the best schedule flight operators
of Beech 1900D aircraft in the world. It is the only airline in
Nepal using the Beech 1900D aircraft. In addition it also has 2
1900C crafts. Buddha air operates to Kathmandu, Pokhara,
Bhairahawa, Nepalgunj, Biratnagar, Bhadrapur, Bharatpur and
Simara. It operates Everest Experience flight which is unlike
any other flights, as it flies past nine peaks circling Mount
Amadablam to enter the Khumbu valley at 25,000 feet and almost 5
nautical miles from Everest (weather permitting). Buddha air has
around 35,000 members in its Royal Club membership.
3. Cosmic air
Cosmic Air started as a domestic airline based in Kathmandu,
Nepal, with its operations from 1997 with two MI 17 Helicopters.
The aircraft fleet was upgraded in 1998-99 with a Dornier 228
aircraft and further in 2000-01 with two SAAB 340 aircraft. It
was then quite a feat as Cosmic Air was the first airline to
introduce second-generation turbo prop aircraft with pressurized
cabin within the domestic flights. And in October 2004 the first
Fokker 100 Jet Aircraft was added to the fleet.
Cosmic Air has revolutionized the domestic operations by
introducing jet aircraft since November 2004 on its trunk
routes, which were previously operated by turbo prop aircraft
for the last 35 years.
Cosmic Air then expanded in a phenomenal fashion by operating
regional flights to India and Bangladesh with its twice-daily
flights to Delhi and five weekly flights to Dhaka.
Cosmic Air is a subsidiary of SOI Group, a conglomerate of 14
companies with interests in Tourism, Aviation, Banking,
Telecommunications, General Trading, Manufacturing, and
Hydropower among others. The Group is among the leading business
houses of Nepal and is one of the largest taxpayers in the
country. With an annual turnover of over USD 300 million, SOI is
one of the largest organizations in terms of employment
generation in Nepal.
Cosmic Air is the largest airline in Nepal in terms of fleet,
seat capacity and traffic carriage. Its fleet consists of 4
Fokker 100 jet aircraft, 2 Dorniers (2 more are under a
maintenance programme) and 1 SAAB 340.
4. Gorkha airlines
Gorkha Airlines took it’s flight in 1996. It initially started
with two MI-l7 Helicopters. It then added Dornier aircraft to
its fleet in November 2002. Now it has a fleet of two German
made Dornier 228. Gorkha Airlines operates mountain flight daily
which allows the passengers to view panoramas extending from
Langtang to Everest and to the Everest area as close as 4
nautical miles. This allows passengers an opportunity to view
the highest mountains of the world and provided good weather, to
witness all 18 of the highest peaks, 4 of which are above 8000
meters.
The airlines operates to Lukla, Tumlingtar, Janakpur, Bharatpur,
Simara, Pokhara, Bhirahawa, Jomsom. In the places like Simikot,
Jumla, Nepalgunj, Phaplu, Bhadrapur, it operates on charter
basis.
5. Sita air
Sita air Operates with 3 Dornier 228-202 twin engine Turbo prop
aircraft fitted with Garrett TPE-33-10T Engine. This 18 seater
STOL ( Short Takeoff and Landing ) aircraft is capable of
landing in 35 airports of Nepal, and covering destinations like
Lukla, Pokhara, Tumlingtar, Dhangadi, Janakpur, Bajhang, ,
Jomsom, Nepalgunj, Kathmandu, Simikot and Chaurjhari. Recently
it has added Surkhet as another scheduled destination. Apart
from these, it also offers charter services to Lukla, Jomsom,
Mountain flights, Simikot, Jumla, Bajhang and Chaurjhari.
6. Yeti airlines
Yeti Airlines is registered as a Private Limited Company and was
established in May 1998. It has obtained “Air Operator
Certificate” numbered 023/98 from Civil Aviation Authority of
Nepal (CAAN) issued on 17, August 1998 to operate commercial
domestic flights to various destinations of Nepal.
It operates scheduled and charter flights within Nepal. It
started its operations with two DHC-6/300 Series Twin Otter
aircrafts flying to remote areas with STOL (Short Take Off and
Landing) airports like Lukla, Phaplu, Lamidanda, Rumjatar,
Simikot.
Within eight years time span, it grew to become the only
airlines to use various aircrafts like DHC-6/300 Twin Otter,
Embraer EMB 110, EMB 120, Y-12, SAAB 340B and now Jetstream 41.
It has the largest fleet of nine aircrafts at present – five
DHC-6/300 Twin Otters and four Jetstream 41 covering major
districts and cities within Nepal - mountain, hill and the terai
regions.
