Adventure Shangrila has
introduced a Volunteer / Culture Study Program
handled by a group of experienced personnel.
This program is designed for those people who
wish to learn about Nepalese culture, caste
system and customs by living with a host family
and engaging in volunteer work in various
fields. Our goal is to give an overview of
Nepal's diverse geographical and cultural
environment and to help the participants to
develop an awareness and deeper understanding of
cultural differences.
Introduction:
Nepal is a tiny Kingdom situated on the southern
slopes of the Himalaya which is rich in cultural
heritage. Nepal is not only a land of
spectacular views and natural beauty, but also a
place of ancient history, and a colourful
cultural environment. The art and culture of
Nepal are timeless (changeless, throughout the
passage of time). Indeed it is a land for you to
experience and discover a unique way of life.
Objectives:
The volunteer programme helps participants to
explore the diverse geography and to develop
understanding of cultural differences through
experiential learning. The main objective of the
programme is to provide opportunities to the
people from all over the world who are
interested in gaining a cultural experience and,
at the same time are willing to share their time
and skills for the benefit of local community.
The participants can offer their volunteer
services basically in the following sectors.
Environmental Awareness Program
This Program mainly aims to raise awareness on
environment conservation. This program includes
teaching environmental science in village
schools; youth clubs and women's group.
It is created to educate school children and
local people on issues such as environmental
conservation, waste management, building
smokeless stove, pit latrines etc. After
completing the training, volunteers will stay
with the host family in their placement area
assisting youth clubs, women's group of the
community sharing their ideas, skills and
knowledge about environmental issues.
Teaching in School
This program is focused in schools to teach
English language. Its main objective is to
impose student's basic ability of English. After
the completion of the training, the volunteers
will be sent to the placement area to teach
English in local school. Primarily, volunteers
assist local English teachers in teaching
conversational English in the school.
This program aims to assist schools for their
quality teaching by supplying volunteers,
conducting school supporting programs.
Volunteers enrolling in this program are also
expected to share their own teaching
methodologies as well as helping the school
teachers to develop their conversational English
skills. Volunteers can teach English in
community, youth groups and women's group and
also teach those children who are unable to go
to school. Volunteers will teach 3-4 hours a
day. The size of the class ranges from 15-50.
The age of the school children will be mostly 10
to 16 years old. No teaching experience is
necessary but a good knowledge of grammatical
English is desirable.
Culture study programs
This program is targeted to anyone who has a
keen interest in Nepal culture. After completion
of intensive Nepali language training,
volunteers will stay with Nepali family in
village through participation in village life,
volunteers will experience the different local
culture, while sharing their own culture and
custom. Volunteers will benefit cross-cultural
experience through the cultural exchange
program.
The program is suitable for anybody like family,
individual or groups. There is no age bar for
this program. This is a unique opportunity to
experience Nepal with a difference that leaves a
lasting impression. The opportunity to stay with
multiple families in different regions of Nepal
can be arranged.
Health & Sanitation Awareness Programs
This program mainly concerns about the primary
health and sanitation in placement area. After
completing the training, volunteers will work in
village school and community to provide primary
health and sanitation awareness and also teach
health and sanitation at local schools.
Volunteers who have strong background or
training in the primary health care may also
work in the health post or health center.
Volunteers can raise awareness by demonstrating
related activities among rural people about
health and sanitation. The participants can
serve in the following field to create health
and sanitation awareness; Teaching, Working in
Orphanage/ Care House, Health Education / Work
in Hospitals, School and Community Maintance,
Home Stay / Cultural Exchange, Others (women
group/ Club etc).
